Well its not really Mardi Gras that was 2 weeks ago but Sydney seems to start early and make it last a month and the parade was Saturday. Eat your heart out Hong Kong New Year Parade this is how to do it.
The weather had been awful with horizontal rain akin to Noah's flood but by evening the rain had stopped and just left the wind. I watched everything from the hotel room which had a really good view of the start but Beloved and Sweetheart went down to watch from the street and catch the party mood and take pics but as that also meant standing on crates to see I declined.Due to the angle and my distance specs not having left Hong Kong it did mean that althoiugh I had the better view I couldn't read the banners and had no idea what "group" I was looking at.
During the buildup in daylight there were a lot of extremely buff people looking glam parading around although a lot of them when they found out how far round they had to go with the road closures went into a hunched scutter which looked a little less fabulous.
Once it got dark it didn't seem to matter how buff you were or how glamourous the costume what mattered was how much LCD lighting your group had and if it had a well worked out synchronised routine. It was as though 10,000 people or more had decided to do some sort of aerobics down Oxford Street and it definately was a young person's thing. My vote goes to the waterpolo team who were buff, had a well co-ordinated routine and were very popular with the crowd as they were wearing just speedos and waterpolo helmets.
It was extremely well organised with several feeds and the Defence Force were particularly proud as it was the first year they had been allowed to march in uniform.
