I wanted to visit Santa Barbara because Ross MacDonald based Santa Theresa on it in his Lew Archer novels. It boasts an "historic centre" but like most of these historic centres it is in the eye of the beholder. it is clearly very upmarket and like Ifrane one wonders where all the cleaners and gardeners live. Unlike Ifrane it does have some car mechanic shops and furniture stores but they are tucked away round the back and preternaturally clean and neat.
