The City Palace Uidaipur

The Sisodia famliy is the oldest dynasty in the world having been Maharanas of Mewar since the 6th century. In the 16C they established Uidaipur as a new city and capital and alone of the Rajasthan princes managed to remain independent of Ahkbar and the Moghuls remaining a Hindu/ jain State. The palaces on islands in Lake Pichola, seen from our room, are now extravagantly expensive hotels. Likewise the City Palace complex also houses two hotels but part is open as a museum and you can walk round the complex and shop, eat in the restaurants or go for boat rides.  It is all owned by the current Marahana or "custodian" as he prefers to be thought but apppears to be a more successful moneyspinner than most english stately homes.
