The French Quarter

Away from Bourbon Street the French Quarter may still be Mayfair prices but is really quite pleasant. It is quite a small area and is completely flat so easily explored on foot, although we were surprised there were not more bicycles. Some, with the classic creole balconies  have been converted into valet parking with the balcony facades still in place.

Others are converted to hotels or expensive condos (flats to us Brits)

There are other attractive local styles; creole cottages which have no internal halls or corridors,

and Greek Revival

Some which are lived in rather than given over to tourism have pretty gardens or plants on their balconies.
