Marco Polo visited Suzhou and called it "The City of a Thousand Bridges". With its being built round canals and his coming from Venice he must have felt quite at home. The oldest remaining bridge dates from the Song Dynasty so he may have used it. Taking a punt ride in the canals you get the feeling it hsan't changed much since his day even though you know many of the buildings were recently restored.
The chinese seem to have a similar custom to the balinese of taking pre-wedding photos. This area is very popular for the photos and various couples would be posing; the brides in the most gorgeous red dresses and the grooms mostly looking bored or embarrassed.
