D H Lawrence's Paintings.

D H Lawrence and Frieda first came to New Mexico in 1922 at the invitation of  Mabel Dodge Luhan a local socialite. She offed to give then Kiowa Ranch just north of Taos which Lawrence declined but subsequently in 1924 Frieda accepted it as a gift. She, in return, gave Luhan the original manuscript of "Sons and Lovers". This was not a transactional arrangement merely a gift exchange but Luhan did not seem to understand that the manuscript was much  more valuable than the ranch and discarded it in a drawer until many years later a guest found it and nearly had a heart attack.
Kiowa Ranch was the only property Lawrence and Frieda ever owned but they continued travelling and by the time of his death in 1930 Lawrence had only spent about 11 months there in aggregate.
Frieda returned to the property with her italian lover Angelino and remained there until her death in 1956 when she bequeathed it to the University of New Mexico.
In 1929 Lawrence exhibited some of his pictures at the Warren Gallery in London. 13 were seized by the police on the grounds of obscenity.. Lawrence was worried that they may be destroyed as was the law with obscene publications so rather than appeal the seizure he came to an arrangement that they would be returned to him provided he took them out of the country  and they never returned. 9 pictures were still in Frieda's possession at her death and were bought by Saki Karavis owner of the La Fonda hotel on the plaza. They are on display there.
