PPIM Frontier Town

The most interesting part of the museum was the Art Gallery. This may be because it did not suffer any dumbing down. We spoke to a curator and she said that her instructions were to present the museum for a 6th Grade level. The gallery was not like other american galleries in that it concentrated on frontier paintings from the 19C to 1950. Consequently you got a good overview of the thinking. I had not heard of any of the artists but Beloved pointed out that there was a much higher proportion of women artists than usual. Sadly photos were not allowed although you could photograph the Bugbee studio re-created as it was left when the artist died. Many of the works exhibited were by him.
In the absence of photos I will instead post those of the mock frontier town recreated in the basement with shops, newspaper offices, a saloon, chapel blacksmiths and various levels of living accommodation.
