We spent a pleasant morning driving to and looking round Las Vegas. You pass through hills which appear forested but apparently it was all grass until the Rancheros started grazing sheep on it which allowed the trees to compete; a sort of reverse Cistercian sheepwalks.
We were attracted to the town as this is where Billie and Captain America were arrested for "parading without a licence".
The town plaza where they paraded looked pleasant and and we parked the car and walked towards the antique shop.
We had a conversation with a man sitting on the seat outside who when he realised we were complete strangers recommended we go to Charlie's for lunch. He associated Wales with Prince Charles who apparently has visited a couple of times because of his connection with the International College down the road.
We went into the shop and had to say where we were from again which immediately made one guy ask of that was near the Isle of Man. It turned out that he had 3 British motor bikes and he and Beloved got involved in detailed "boys toys" conversation. I had a long talk with the proprietress who made some very good suggestions as to where we should go over the next week and then her husband heard me telling her that we'd gone to Santa Fe Bacaues I'd loved "Tree in the Trail" so much as a child and it seems he was a big Holling Clancy Holling fan and had all his books. I'd never seen any others and he got them out and showed me. His favourite was paddle to the sea. I just need some children now to buy them some.
So we left the antique shop and went into the music shop next door and had another long conversation. They said it was a music shop but I could not actually tell what, if anything, they sold. They had a couple of desks piled high with papers and some valuable posters such as signed editions of the Beatles first USA tour but no records, nor instruments, nor sheet music. Still they were nice people so we went off to Charlie's taking pictures of the plaza as we went
and it tuned out to be a real retro diner with excellent food.
We then took pictures of Tito's Gallery which was us for the external scenes of the town jail where George salutes D H Lawrence with his first of the day and gives Wyatt the card for Miss Tinkertoy's.
The day then took a turn for the bad as we were driving to Taos; a route of allegedly stunning scenery. Sadly all we saw was the hail bouncing of the bonnet.
