Millicent Rogers moved to Taos in 1947 to recover from her break-up with Clark Gable. She fell in love with it and with the Native American art traditions whic she started to collect. As the grand-daughter of the co-founder of Standerd oil she could afford to indulge her passion and in just six years formed an impressive colection. in 1956, 3 years after her death her son founded the museum in the former home of two of her closest friends. He continued to collect as well and the museum now has over 7000 items in its collection only a fraction of which can be displayed.
