The Turquoise Trail and Sandia peak

Cedar Crest lies at the base of the Turquoise Trail where the road up Sandia Peak turns off. Sandia peak is over 10,000ft high and you can get what I would call a cablecar but they call a tramway up from Albequrque. We went up the back way by road. The views from the top didn't photograph terribly well but every phone company in the states must have a relay up there.

Five days earlier there had been an snow fall across eastern New Mexico and Western Texas and high up there was still a fair bit about despite the 25C temperatures. Snow is unusual as late as 30th April but the record was set at May 5th in 1917.

The Turquoise Trail is a National Scenic Byway so we chose that route to Santa fe rather than the I25. It passes Cerrillos where the famous #turquoise mines were situated indeed some are still mined today.
